This information may be helpful to determine what versions of WinZip are currently installed on various workstations and whether or not these versions have been registered.

Version Numbers

The version number of the WinZip executable file, winzipexe or winzipexe, is unique to the different WinZip versions, but is not equal to the version number you will see displayed in the About WinZip dialog. A unique first number in the executable file version became less important when the mode of installation changed so that Windows Installer (MSI files) is responsible, rather than the WinZip executable file itself.

Starting with WinZip 14 in the table below, you will see build numbers listed as part of the version to help differentiate. Please note that other build numbers may apply for minor updates. You can assume, for example, that if you were to find a executable file version number higher than , but lower than , you have located a build of WinZip released prior to

Registration Information

The license code for WinZip had the same structure from WinZip through WinZip SR With version , WinZip registration information was stored in the computer's cromwellpsi.com file. In versions SR-1 this same information was moved to the registry and stored as string values in the HKCU\Software\Nico Mak Computing\WinZip\WinIni key. In either case, if this is a fully licensed copy of WinZip (site license installation) there will be a win32_version value that begins with R. If it is unregistered or is a single-user registration the value will begin without the "R". For WinZip versions there will be a dash ( - ) and the actual WinZip version number after the "R" or "". For example, if the user has WinZip SR-1 installed the win32_version value will be (with or without the beginning "R").

For single-user registrations with any of these versions there will also be entries (or string values) called 'Name' and 'SN'. The 'Name' entry will have a value equal to whatever the user supplied for his/her name and the 'SN' entry will have an 8-digit number for a value (with the earliest versions this might be a combination of 8 numbers and letters).

Starting with WinZip , major WinZip upgrades make use of a new registration scheme, eliminating the possibility to upgrade without purchasing a license upgrade. You should still find a win32_version entry in the WinIni key of the registry and it should have the same type of value (i.e. ). However, in order to differentiate in name and registration code, and later do not use the Name and SN entries, but now use a Name1 and an SN1 entry for single-user licenses. Again, "Name1" should have a value of the user's name and the "SN1" entry should have a 30 character code set up as 6 groups of 5 (letters and numbers) with dashes ( - ) in between. If the user has upgraded from a licensed copy of WinZip or earlier, the registry will still contain the "Name" and "SN" entries as well as the "Name1" and "SN1" entries. This was maintained so that users could try the newer version and, if they didn't like it, would be able to reinstall the older one without losing their information.

Also starting with WinZip , a fully licensed multi-user version of WinZip is no longer distributed. Instead, the user is provided a file that will register WinZip and is linked in our database with the pertinent information. With WinZip , placing this cromwellpsi.com file in the WinZip program folder would cause WinZip to be registered. This does not change the win32_version value (an "R" is not added). With WinZip and later, the location for the cromwellpsi.com file was changed in order to be consistent with Windows certification requirements. It is now placed in a WinZip subfolder in the Windows CommonAppData folder. This folder contains application data for all users.

A typical path for the cromwellpsi.com file is

C:\ProgramData\WinZip

WinZip Registration Instructions

Customers who purchase a multi-user license will receive an email confirmation after purchasing a license containing both a link to the WinZip distribution file and a link to your unique cromwellpsi.com registration file. This file contains registration information and a link to the WinZip web site so you can view the number of licenses assigned. To register your copy of WinZip:

1. Download and install WinZip from the link provided in your order confirmation
2. Download your unique registration file (cromwellpsi.com) from the link provided in your order confirmation
3. Double-click the cromwellpsi.com file (or a shortcut to the file) to begin the registration process (WinZip MUST already be installed in order to register the product)
• Alternatively, you can drag and drop it onto an open WinZip window, or right-click it in a folder window and choose Register WinZip
  Note: Dragging a cromwellpsi.com file onto an open WinZip window will not add the file to an archive, but instead will try to register the product.
• Finally, you can manually place the cromwellpsi.com file in the WinZip subfolder in the Windows Common AppData folder. This folder contains application data for all users. A typical path for the cromwellpsi.com file is C:\ProgramData\WinZip. The presence of cromwellpsi.com in this folder will convert the evaluation version of WinZip to a registered version.

WinZip Courier Registration Instructions

Customers who purchase a multi-user license will receive an email confirmation after purchasing a license. The email will contain a link to the WinZip Courier distribution file and a link to your unique cromwellpsi.com registration file. To register your copy of WinZip Courier:

1. Download and install WinZip Courier from the link provided in your order confirmation
2. Download your unique registration file (cromwellpsi.com) from the link provided in your order confirmation
3. Double-click the cromwellpsi.com file (or a shortcut to the file) and WinZip Courier will automatically be registered (WinZip Courier MUST already be installed in order to register the product)
• Alternatively, you can right-click the file in a folder window and choose Register WinZip Courier from the shortcut menu
• Finally, you can manually place the cromwellpsi.com file in the WinZipEC subfolder in the Windows Common AppData folder. This folder contains application data for all users. A typical path for the cromwellpsi.com file is C:\ProgramData\WinZipEC. The presence of cromwellpsi.com in this folder will convert the evaluation version of WinZip Courier to a registered version.

WinZip Self-Extractor Registration Instructions

Customers who purchase a multi-user license will receive an email confirmation after purchasing a license containing both a link to the WinZip Self-Extractor distribution file and a link to your unique cromwellpsi.com registration file. To register your copy of WinZip Self-Extractor:

1. Download and install WinZip Self-Extractor from the link provided in your order confirmation.
2. Download your unique registration file (cromwellpsi.com) from the link provided in your order confirmation.
3. Double-click the cromwellpsi.com file (or a shortcut to the file) and WinZip Self-Extractor will automatically be registered (WinZip Self-Extractor MUST already be installed in order to register the product).
• Alternatively, you can right-click on cromwellpsi.com in Windows Explorer and choose Register WinZip Self-Extractor.
• Finally, you can manually place the cromwellpsi.com file in the WinZipSE subfolder in the Windows Common App Data folder. The presence of cromwellpsi.com in this folder will convert the evaluation version of WinZip Self-Extractor to a registered version. However, if you are on Windows 98, the cromwellpsi.com file goes into the WinZip Self-Extractor folder.

Each set of instructions below assumes you have installed the correct major version of the appropriate application. Entering your WinZip registration code

1. Double click the WinZip shortcut on the desktop (open WinZip)
2. The registration reminder dialog will open
3. Important: Enter your name and registration code EXACTLY as they appear on your registration acknowledgment email
   
4. Click Register - You should now be registered

Entering your WinZip Courier registration code

1. Click Register WinZip Courier

  Click the Start button at the lower left or your display, then All Apps, and then Register WinZip Courier in the WinZip Courier group
• Windows 8
  Click Register WinZip Courier on the Start page
• Windows 7
  Click Start, then All Programs, and then Register WinZip Courier in the WinZip Courier group
2. The Register WinZip Courier dialog will open
   If the dialog is for a different WinZip Courier version, download and install the correct version.
3. Important: Enter your name and registration code EXACTLY as they appear on your registration acknowledgment email
   
4. Click OK - You should now be registered

Entering your WinZip Self-Extractor registration code

1. Open WinZip Self-Extractor
• Windows 10
  Click the Start button at the lower left or your display, then All Apps, and then WinZip Self-Extractor in the WinZip Self-Extractor group
• Windows 8
  Click WinZip Self-Extractor on the Start page
• Windows 7
  Click Start, then All Programs, and then WinZip Self-Extractor in the WinZip Self-Extractor group
2. Click OK to dismiss the registration reminder dialog
3. Click Enter Registration Code
4. The Register WinZip Self-Extractor dialog will open
   If the dialog is for a different WinZip Self-Extractor version, download and install the correct version.
5. Important: Enter your name and registration code EXACTLY as they appear on your registration acknowledgment email
   
6. Click OK - You should now be registered

To use Copy and Paste:

1. Place your cursor at the beginning or end character of your code (in your email message or on a webpage)
2. Click and hold your left mouse button and drag the cursor to the last character on the other end; this will cause the code to be highlighted
3. Press CTRL+C on your keyboard to Copy the code
4. Click in the box where the code must be entered and press CTRL+V on your keyboard to Paste the code there
