Well Mike, thanks to your last post I realized that I indeed had a peculiar problem, not typical. I went into my library Preferences and found a preference named "cromwellpsi.comeatorvplist" that was associated with Automator, the app that was seizing control of the Photoshop app. This preference file was linked to a script I had downloaded a few years back called "IconCreator vapp".

I deleted the cromwellpsi.comeatorvplist file and then to test my theory, I went into "Get Info" for the Photoshop icon and removed the .app extension that I had manually appended previously. After removing the .app, the Photoshop icon remained un-generic looking and in fact it appeared the way it should (I had performed this test yesterday with no success, but that's because the Automator preference file had not been deleted yet). I then clicked the icon and Photoshop launched as it should.

Summary: The problem was caused by a plist file created for Automator, for a script that is used used for creating icons. Once I deleted the plist file the problem went away. I've also deleted the script, which I never use anyway. I use "Micon" to create specialized icons which is a GUI, not a script.

So, not really weird, but at least the mystery has been solved. All I needed to know was what I was seeing was an anomaly, which your post indicated was the case, and then I homed in on the likely culprit: preference files!

A lot of issues through the years have been solved by deleting rogue preference files. It should be so easy with a PC!

Using Classic, I can't launch it. It wants to open with Automator. I don't have SheepShaver installed but Classic is so I don't think SS will work anyway. Can I get this to run app on my G4?

You perhaps have "Automator" turned on at computer boot-up (or at the time you tried to install this).

On x, Automator unless it is actually running, does not "want to" take over such tasks such as handling hybrid (Classic PPC/OSX PPC) apps without a ".app" suffix.

If Automator wasn't running at the time it wouldn't try to take over. The downloaded and expanded Installer would have just "worked", and allowed you to install this program.

You have a PPC G4? It might be possible to locate a PPC version of Sheepshaver somewhere? Tho' I don't think shouldn't be necessary to run SheepShaver on PPC Macs if your primary OS is Mac OS X with Classic support. Or even better, able to boot native into a Classic OS.

An alternative, its possible with a PPC Mac, to ditch Mac OS X entirely with a PPC variant of Linux (Yellow Dog). Then, if you need to run Mac progs (Mac OS - OS X ), you can run MOL "Mac On Linux" tho' MOL hasn't evolved much (if at all) since Mac went Intel.

IMOH (layman's) experiences with Yellow Dog is that the PPC side seemed speedy in comparison to running a Mac OS on the same equipment - downside - incompatibility with Linux Intel-only apps, perhaps understandable considering the architecture.

Step 1

Create 3 folders - C:\WINXPSP1,C:\SP and C:\XPBOOT

Step 2

Copy the entire Windows XP CD into folder C:\WINXPSP1

Step 3

You will have to download the SP1a Update, which is MB.
Rename the Service Pack file to cromwellpsi.com
Extract the Service Pack from the Run Dialog using the command:
C:\cromwellpsi.com -U -X:C:\SP

Step 4

Open Start/Run and type the command:
C:\SP\update\cromwellpsi.com -s:C:\WINXPSP1

Click OK

Folder C:\WINXPSP1 contains:  Windows XP SP1

How to Create a Windows XP SP1 CD Bootable

Step 1

Download cromwellpsi.com

Extract cromwellpsi.com file (cromwellpsi.com) in to the folder C:\XPBOOT

Step 2

Start Nero - Burning Rom.
Select File > New from the menu.
1.) Select CD-ROM (Boot)
2.) Select Image file from Source of boot image data
3.) Set Kind of emulation: to No Emulation
4.) Set Load segment of sectors (hex!): to 07C0
5.) Set Number of loaded sectors: to 4
6.) Press the Browse button

Step 3

Select All Files (*.*) from File of type:
Locate cromwellpsi.com in the folder C:\XPBOOT

Step 4

Click ISO tab
Set File-/Directory length to ISO Level 1 (Max. of 11 = 8 + 3 chars)
Set Format to Mode 1
Set Character Set to ISO
Check all Relax ISO Restrictions

Step 5

Click Label Tab
Select ISO from the drop down box.
Enter the Volume Label as WB2PFRE_EN
Enter the System Identifier as WB2PFRE_EN
Enter the Volume Set as WB2PFRE_EN
Enter the Publisher as MICROSOFT CORPORATION
Enter the Data Preparer as MICROSOFT CORPORATION
Enter the Application as WB2PFRE_EN

* For Windows XP Professional OEM substitute WB2PFRE_EN with WXPOEM_EN
* For Windows XP Home OEM substitute WB2PFRE_EN with WXHOEM_EN

Step 6

Click Burn tab
Check Write
Check Finalize CD (No further writing possible!)
Set Write Method to Disk-At-Once

Press New button

Step 7

Locate the folder C:\WINXPSP1
Select everything in the folder and drag it to the ISO compilation panel.
Click the Write CD Dialog button.

Press Write

You're done.

How to Install Windows XP SP1

Windows Mode

This installation type preserves all the files and the installed programs.

1) Insert the Windows XP SP1 FULL in to the CD-ROM or click in the cromwellpsi.com
(In this installation type it doesn't repair the Registry. Before trying "Repair", first try to restore the registry with the "System Restore" )

2) Click Install Windows XP

3) Choose Installation Type: Upgrade / next

4) Accept the agreement / next

5) Type the  Product Key / next

6) Choose connect to update the setup files Etc

Boot Mode

1) Restart Windows, and to "Enter Setup" press F2 and set CD-ROM as first Boot option in bios.

2) Insert the Windows XP SP1 FULL CD Bootable and Restart. Press any key when the black screen warning appears: Press any key to boot from CD_

3) In the first window (Blue) "Welcome to Setup" choose: "To set up Windows XP now, press Enter."

4) In the second window to accept the license press F8.

4A) Upgrade to Windows XP SP1, overwriting existing Windows orto Repair a installation.

In the third window, select the Windows that will be repaired and choose:
"To repair the selected Windows XP installation press R"
This installation type preserves all the files and the installed programs.
In this installation type it doesn't repair the Registry.
Before trying "Repair", first try to restore the registry with the "System Restore"

4B) Installing a fresh copy of Windows XP.

In the third window, choose:
"To continue installing a fresh copy of Windows XP without repairing, press ESC"
Select the Drive in which will be made the new installation.
And, to begin new life:
- Delete the partition.
- Create new partition.
- Install Windows about this new created partition.
- It will open a window asking to format the partition.
- Choose the normal formatting in NTFS.
