Abstract
IBM Data Replication V (IDR) builds on the strengths and robust capabilities of IBM InfoSphere Data Replication (E30) offering by introducing an alternative simplified licensing model based on the capacity of the relational database management systems that act as the sources for replication processing. This alternative product incorporates unlimited target processing for all supported targets whether these targets are running on-premise or in the cloud.
IDR provides the exact same highly scalable, low-impact, and enterprise-ready data replication platform for near real time replication of System i, Linux, Unix, and Microsoft Windows data sources to a broad array of on-premise and cloud-based data targets in support of big data integration, continuous data availability, consolidation, warehousing, business analytics initiatives, and zero- downtime migrations and upgrades.
Built on log-based real time change data capture of relational database system (RDBMS) data with transactional integrity, IDR delivers high performance, low latency replication between like databases as well as highly heterogeneous sources and targets with no direct impact on source environments. Supported System i, Linux, Unix, and Microsoft Windows source and target RDBMSs are DB2, Oracle, and SQL Server. Some of the broad set of additional targets are IBM InfoSphere Information Server/DataStage/QualityStage, Apache Hadoop/webHDFS, dashDB, Cloudant, and FlexRep for JDBC accessible relational databases, along with the latest addition to the CDC family, Apache Kafka when used in conjunction with the Confluent platform for Apache Kafka.
IBM Data Replication Db2 for z/OS Remote Source delivers a deployment model for the dynamic delivery and on-going synchronization of mainframe Db2 z/OS data with Linux, Unix, Windows (LUW) and cloud data platforms that:
- Minimize z/OS MIPS used by shifting source capture processing to an LUW platform.
- Continue the tradition of low impact log-based replication with high throughput and low latency.
- Simplify deployment using an LUW based installation and configuration process.
- Include unlimited LUW and cloud target engines. These are the same proven target engines that are shared with Data Replication V
Db2 for z/OS is widely used by organizations around the globe as a critical data store for core applications. This data drives information-centric initiatives that run on LUW and cloud platforms. It makes real-time replication of Db2 z/OS data essential to today's information-on-demand platforms that are built on traditional Relational Database Management System (RDBMS) data warehouses, Hadoop data lakes, Kafka streaming information hubs, cloud data stores, and more.
This latest addition to IBM data replication portfolio introduces a Db2 z/OS source engine that:
- Delivers affordability and deployment simplicity that is ideally suited to Linux, UNIX and Windows environments.
- Combines a low-impact, Db2 z/OS log reader with an LUW-based source capture engine and existing IBM broad portfolio of LUW and cloud target engines.
- Can reduce Db2 z/OS source engine resource utilization by as much as 90% compared to the traditional model.

Product positioning
IBM Data Replication V is integrated into the IBM Information Management software portfolio. This product is intended for:
- Customers who want accurate and frequent sales and customer reports to make better operational decisions regarding pricing, merchandising, and inventory management. This capability is enabled through consolidation of key business data from diverse operational systems into a centralized data warehouse in near real time.
- Companies that require more business agility through real-time change data capture.
- Enterprises that require more business visibility through granular data changes in real-time business intelligence.
- Organizations that require the ability to increase responsiveness to business events and capitalize on upcoming business opportunities through event detection.
- Retailers who want to sell in stores, over the web, and by phone, and who need consistent up-to-date information accessible to all three channels. For example, ensuring that wedding registry purchases do not get duplicated and that customers can inquire over the phone or on the web about product availability and the status of orders completed through other channels.
- Public companies that require consolidated financial reporting across a range of transactional systems in different regions, departments, or business units.
- Companies that need to migrate data from an incompatible ERP application of an acquired company into their own ERP application (or between incompatible versions of an ERP application).
- Shipping companies that enable customers to access real-time shipment information on their websites while significantly reducing the impact on their mission-critical logistics systems they use to help ensure efficient, continuous operations.
- Government agencies that provide public access to up-to-date information on criminal proceedings on the Internet, but cannot risk letting users directly access sensitive information on offenders.
- Financial Services companies that need to flow data from legacy financial systems on mainframes into systems on open platforms to support Internet-based communications, statement processing, and other applications more efficiently with minimal impact on key legacy systems.
- Health insurers who need to offload queries, reports, and backups to avoid impacting performance and user response times on claims processing systems that are essential for operations.

Highlights
IBM Data Replication VSAM for z/OS Remote Source V adds to the IBM Data Replication portfolio with a Virtual Storage Access Method (VSAM) remote sourcing offering that provides a new deployment model for the dynamic delivery and ongoing synchronization of mainframe VSAM data with destinations situated on Linux, Unix, Windows (LUW), and cloud data platforms. This new deployment model:
- Minimizes computing power (as measured in z/OS millions of instructions per processor second (MIPS)) by shifting some source capture processing from IBM Z to any platform that can host the newly developed container.
- Continues the paradigm of low impact log-based replication with high throughput and low latency.
- Simplifies deployment by using container technology for ease of installation and configuration, when compared to traditional IBM Z software installation and maintenance mechanisms.
- Includes unlimited LUW and cloud target engines. These are the same target engines that are shared with IBM Data Replication Db2 for z/OS Remote Source V
VSAM is widely used by organizations around the world as a critical data store for core applications. This data is needed to drive information-centric initiatives that run on LUW and cloud platforms. It makes near real-time replication of VSAM data, essential for information on-demand platforms that are built on traditional Relational Database Management System (RDBMS) data warehouses, Hadoop data lakes, Kafka streaming information hubs, and cloud data stores.
The new VSAM source engine in the IBM Data Replication portfolio brings the following advantages:
- Delivers affordability and deployment simplicity that is ideally suited to distributed environments.
- Combines a low-impact, VSAM log reader working in tandem with a container-deployed source capture engine that runs outside the IBM Z environment, and the existing IBM broad portfolio of LUW and cloud target engines.
- Can greatly reduce VSAM source engine resource utilization when compared to the traditional model. Additionally, the IBM Z resident VSAM log reader is zIIP eligible optimizing the potential for cost savings.

Description
IBM Data Replication V (IDR) builds on the strengths and robust capabilities of the IBM InfoSphere Data Replication (IIDR) offering by introducing an alternative simplified licensing model based on the capacity of the relational database management systems that act as the sources for replication processing. This alternative product incorporates unlimited target processing for all supported targets whether they are running on-premise or in the cloud. The most commonly used targets are relational databases, IBM InfoSphere Information Server/DataStage/QualityStage, Apache Hadoop/webHDFS, dashDB, Cloudant, FlexRep, and the latest addition to the IIDR CDC family, Apache Kafka.
IBM Data Replication inherits all of the capabilities of past releases of IBM InfoSphere Data Replication as well as the enhancements and extensions delivered as part of the V release of IBM InfoSphere Data Replication.
The most significant enhancement is a new CDC Kafka target engine based on use of the Confluent platform for Apache Kafka:
- The addition of a CDC target engine for Apache Kafka with the requisite Confluent platform for Apache Kafka delivers an ideal big data landing zone and point of enterprise integration for changing transactional source data. This combination of a highly scalable clustered data environment, designed for streaming and managing volatile data with near-real time changed data feeds, simplifies the delivery of operational data to multiple consumers such as Hadoop/HDFS, cloud data stores such as dashDB, and even event-driven consumers. The CDC for Kafka engine can replicate using either the Java API for highest performance or the REST API for optimum deployment flexibility.
- The Confluent distribution of Apache Kafka is required.
Additional CDC enhancements include:
- CDC replicating to and from SQL Server synchronous candidates in Always On availability groups
- CDC source and target support for SQL Server
Q Replication enhancements include support for DB2 V with support for new data types and extended row size:
- Q Replication supports the new DB2 data types, BINARY and VARBINARY, and extended row size support (wide tables). BINARY and VARBINARY data types enable binary string data to be stored and manipulated without the overhead of using a binary large object (BLOB) type. A binary string is a sequence of bytes that can be used to store graphics, sound, or mixed media.
- Extended row size support (wide table support) enables you to create a table where its row length can exceed the maximum record length for the page size of the table space. Without extended row size support, the maximum number of bytes allowed in a table is dependent on the page size of the table space.
Additional Q Replication enhancements include:
- Load performance
- General performance improvements
Optional add-on to extend IBM System z replication solutions with System i, Linux, Unix, and Microsoft Windows targets
