-edit— wait… maybe it was. Sure you’r not refering to uv tiled micro chunks thingy…that was not useful for me. I need not and exploded , while ordered, micro uv islands layout…I need easy to 2d-edit textures, no matter if it’s rt games or render…but very specially if it’s games… if they have come to better uv mapping methods…it’d make zb even more interesting…still, I have more needs in anim than ih the other areas.

Well, I had made that trick on low level editing point to point in b, but discovered I was missing a load of tools I have in Wings. I had some feeling of ability to control stuff in an accurate way via low cage in wings…But reading you seems there’s a real jump also in modelling in Last time I checked…I think it had been raised the rpice to $, no upgrade rights… Something I can’t afford after buying XSI foundation. Anyway, I model inwings almost like with clay, using certain techniques, the new knife, an ngons a lot. I mean I am really quick as never was before with it… So, more worried lately in speeding up/inmproving animation workflow. I mean, I can output whatever I like with my set of tools.

But sounds very interesting. The dying with ks tris…I have not made that hi res…as i model in low cage, if I have done so, is for checking, not for modelling…one huge advantage it has, and even more if u can use a package that allows leaving the subdiv for only render time (I think Blender can(I’m all about rt 3d games))

I don’t know…not long ago I posted an orc modelled by me…the head (practically) was made in an afternoon, or half of that time… with wrinkles, etc, only in Wings. Of course there’s some point you need more detailing and there’s when I’ll probably use ZB oAmorphium…to later on texture with dp3d.

Would I like to have zb2…? yep…but the needed tasks I can do with my today’s set (not mentioned I have onlyexplored xsi animation, not modelling and ubv mapping, yet(again, as I don’t need it so much))

Today, my option of output a displacement map and a normal map, is not bad at all, using the free tool ORB. Would be better to have ZB 2…? no doubt…is a matter of money…

I may contact with them as it sounds that they could be offering some upgrade discount or something, from reading you…but the fact is…I have already closed the money flow towards packages after xsi… Indeed, my needs would be more near buying some kickass animation tool like Messiah (the non renderer version which exports as x (unless the renderer version has hair, hehe)) …but…with xsi, neither I have the need.

I’ll dig a bit though, in zb site and forums to see what’s all about upgrades, thanks.

I rememeber editing…like tris meshes in Amorphium1 with a pentium 1, MHz, 32 ram…it almost died with that.

I have now a piv 2,4 mhz, ddr, and the gfti…sure the machine that Gwot (an epic game artist that is in love with zb, I think they use it for generating the normals maps for the games…hehe, maybe unreal 3 engine? ) has is hundred times better. He speaks of millions of polies like I can speak about eating cookies

I guess zb2 is really optimized for huge meshes. Is editing directly over a hi res mesh, which has its advantages and disadvantages…in the company I may get into now, they’re frankly not interested in that way…

Imho, many model in zb, at least in the past, lacked some accurateness in the base mesh building, and an overuse of “smudging” the mesh to achive the detail, the resolting mesh, even not seing the wires, was as a result, a too smudged one, with even adding tons of wrinkles, looks unrealistic…like when I’m using terracota, and yet have not polished the smudging operations. I think the key is obtain a subdiv like treatment, while using zb tools.

Have you used the old Metareyes 5 in Max? that one allowed the build of “metamuscles”, being able to relocate them later on, edit them, etc, giving you control of the build in a real anathomic way of the human/animal, and build it greately.

Of course, if tomorrow somebody would make me a gift of zb (that wont happen) I’d be using it a lot.

I made this orc in a breeze with wings3d…is not even half way in its detailing in the head, but I can tell u is pretty easy to add detail to it, and does allow me having many programs at a time while making wrinkles… I guess if I passed some 3 hours more in the head I’d show more clearly what level wings3d can actually achieve with simple old subdiv. Now u only see an sketch…and yet not fixed the edgeloops wires flow.

I’m busy witha set of animations; can’t justify time on a just-for-pleasure thing (the orc) by now…

That was some quick sketching. If I’d dedicate myself seriously into a project, would be interesting to carry Wings3d to its limits of making a crazily high res mesh, of course using low cage only…but at some point would not be useful, of course…there are modellers that I use, like Metasequoia japanesse modeller, able to handle quite a load of thousands of tris quite faster than wings3d…and than Maxmax handles hi res badly (unless u have a really powerful machine and pro card)

probably the typical zb2 amount of polies would not be handled ok by any standard modeller.

BTW, for the operations you are making, a cpu is quite …non desirable…unless u have a very special machine with strenghts in other areas, multi processor or something strange…

Also my machine is really low… (till recently, game making didn’t require this much…and as I work for personal projects in games for low machines, not even supporting normals maps, so…)

i guess many of the great models we seen done by (let’s face it) great professionals well atracted by Pixologic …have dream like machines…Dunno read some post of gwot describing th machine he was using zb2 with…lol. I can’t remember, but would not be surprised to hear things like several gigs of ram, xeons or the like with loads of ghz, and 3d pro cards, not just gamers cards…

Of course, software does A LOT. Max (a tool I love for other matters) does really a bad job with hi res meshes. I experienced at jobs Maya handling them quite better. And surprisingly, made a curious test, where japanese modeller metasequoia was loading a huge mesh like paper. Very recently, I was loading in my machine…some 3d scans…we’re speaking of huge numbers here. U know, models in PLY, or IGES format, medicine scans, or simple figure or human 3d scanned models,point clouds, etc. Well, several standard modellers and viewers…simply died with it…metasequoia allowed me even rotate it almost normally…I had experienced that before with very hi res tree models or the like.

The way I see it is…all in hi res is an expensive vice

Yet though…I insist that the individual have methods to do really high res things -without aproaching zb2 output- very realistic (often, if ends up as animation project (my only pursuit) be it games or movie) , the camera distance, speed of movement/motion blur, compression video format, pixel resolution of render, or game engine limits, will kill most of the detail: so , very realistic stuff can be done with tools like blender, wings…(Tatoo is a nice 3d painter for non comercial projects, windows only) …we’r speaking a lot of very expensive tools, but many people can’t afford them. (I neither can, after that xsi )

Oh, one thing that i really like of Silo over wings (in the rest, advantages and disadvantages, I still prefer wings) is the topology brush. truely. while the ngons handling and mesh-like free way in wings is cool, nothing faster than draw the wires…I have not used it yet, just seen videos. For me, it is totally new that addition in zb of the topology brush. Is starting to make zb2 too attractive. Anyway, I have bought through the years dp3d , amorphium1 (years before it got free with digit mag) , Organica, Softy3d, Milkshape, ultimate Unwrap, Character fx, XSI, …and not eager to buy more, at least for a huge while. More when I have all what i need now for personal projects. Every purchase was good, I have used all em a lot, and each purchase was a months study: I read all manuals and docs, available in the site, and practiced a lot with demo, before purchasing dp3d. I do so almost allways.

BTW, was really impressed with that ZB Picasso(at old age) reproduction made by some TV pro for an advertismemnt that couldn’t get Picasso’s family license.
